Artist Statement

I create photographs that reflect my beliefs about human ideals and their embodiment in our relationships to the environment and one another. These ideals; belonging and community, spirituality, integration and partnership with nature; are universal in the human experience. My exploration of these ideals follows the tradition of artists in many media: Paul Strand and Minor White; Cezzane and Van Gogh; Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe; Beethoven and David Wilcox.

My most direct influence comes from my photographic mentor, Stephen Carl, whose use of abstract visual elements convey order, quiet contemplation and a holistic concern with the integration between mankind and nature.

I invite you to see my photographs, not as mere representations of scenes and objects, but as bridges to existential concerns, interrelationships to one another, relationships to the natural order and our own identities.
